Brampton was once known as “The Flower Town of Canada” due to its robust greenhouse industry. Edward Dale started it all. He arrived in Brampton from England in 1863, and Dale’s Nursery soon became the town’s largest employer.
Dale developed a global export market and a grading system for his flowers, and had 140 greenhouses at the height of the company. It was also the largest cut flower business in North America, producing 20 million blooms and introducing a number of rose and orchid species into the market. He wasn’t alone. At one point, there were 48 flower nurseries doing business in town!
The city is still committed to going green, establishing the “Brampton Grow Green” Environmental Master Plan in 2014 in an effort to become more environmentally sustainable.
